Winniweta Falls, Eagle Mtn and Iron Mtn
June 16, 2013. The forecast wasn't so hot, so I decided to string together a few short redlining hikes. Actually, the weather turned out better than expected... I had a few sprinkles on my third and final hike but it was a nice day otherwise.
Started out with a hike to Winniweta Falls via the Winniweta Falls Trail. Lots of trail signs except at the falls, so I wasn't sure if I was seeing a teaser cascade or the real thing. Hiked at least a half-mile beyond it on the ski trail before turning back. The falls were really pretty, and the ford was a knee-deep wade. It was very buggy but nice otherwise. 3 miles total.
Hike 2: Eagle Mountain via the Eagle Mountain Path. This was a nice little hike with a good view at the end... it was steeper than I was expecting near the top. Glad I brought the poles! 1.8 miles.
Hike 3: Iron Mountain and the Mines sidepath. Scariest part was driving up that super steep dirt road. Views from the ledge near the top of Iron Mountain were outstanding. I had a nice walk over to the South Cliffs, which also had a great view. Then a gnarly descent to the iron mines... boy was that super steep and poorly marked. And also black fly central... it was ridiculously buggy thanks to a water filled iron pit. I saw the pit and the tailings... missed the tunnel that's supposed to be down here, despite wandering around a bit. Made it back to the fire tower remnants before the rain started pattering. 3.6 miles.
